I woke up today to the sad news that Pat DiNizio, lead singer for The Smithereens had passed away. I thought back to the late 80's, watching MTV and watching the video for "Blood and Roses". Then I found out that the band was from New Jersey and Pat was from Scotch Plains and had lived there the past 20 years. I have lived myself in Scotch Plains the past 8 years and Pat's house is right across the street from my daughter's school.
Sometime in the early 90's was the one time I saw The Smithereens live and what I remember most was how loud they were. It was at Kean College and the venue was not that large but it was quite a memorable show.
At work, I entered The Smithereens on my online radio station and I will listen to songs that I haven't heard too much over the years. A small part of my early adulthood is now gone and while this saddens me, I think Pat went to the otherside with a life well lived. Prayers to Pat's family and friends and hope everybody can listen to at least one Smithereens' song today.
